1. The Origins of the Day

Historical Background

Anne and Samantha lived in different times but shared a common trait of courage and endurance. This strong bond inspired the creation of a special day in their honor. Supporters for postage stamps honoring Ann Frank and Samantha Smith created Anne and Samantha Day.

Anne Frank

Anne Frank captivated generations with the words she penned in her diary – the heartfelt musings of a young Jewish girl. Born on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, Anne was the second daughter of Otto and Ruth Frank. The Frank family fled Nazi Germany for the safety of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Germany at that time began its aggressive campaign in 1939 by attacking Poland. Unfortunately, by 1942, the Nazis had occupied the Netherlands as well.

Shortly after receiving a red checkered diary for her 13th birthday, Anne’s family and her father’s employees’ families were forced into hiding. It was the year 1942. They found refuge in the hidden space at the back of her father’s company building. It was in this cramped hiding spot that Anne poured her thoughts onto paper daily. She finds solace in her diary during moments of overwhelming despair.

In August of 1944, betrayal tore Anne’s family apart, separating the men from the women. The Germans forced the Franks into grueling labor under harsh conditions in concentration camps. Sadly, only Anne’s father survived the ordeal. He later stumbled upon Anne’s diary, a poignant reminder of the young girl he had lost.

Samantha Smith

Samantha Smith, born on June 29, 1972, is the daughter of a college literature instructor and a social worker. When she was just ten years old, she became curious about the Cold War between the United States and Russia. To satisfy her curiosity, she decided to write a letter to the Soviet leader, Yuri Andropov.

Dear Mr. Andropov,
My name is Samantha Smith. I am ten years old. Congratulations on your new job. I have been worrying about Russia and the United States getting into a nuclear war. Are you going to vote to have a war or not? If you aren’t please tell me how you are going to help to not have a war. This question you do not have to answer, but I would like to know why you want to conquer the world or at least our country. God made the world for us to live together in peace and not to fight.

Samantha Smith

Surprisingly, Samantha’s letter was published in the Soviet newspaper, Pravda. However, she never received a response from Andropov. Undeterred, she then sent a letter to the Soviet Union’s Ambassador to the United States. She hoped to finally get a response from Andropov.

A Reply

On April 26, 1983, she got a response. Andropov answered all of the young girl’s questions in a long letter. He even invited her to visit the Soviet Union.

In America and in our country there are nuclear weapons — terrible weapons that can kill millions of people in an instant. But we do not want them to be ever used. That’s precisely why the Soviet Union solemnly declared throughout the entire world that never — never — will it use nuclear weapons first against any country. In general we propose to discontinue further production of them and to proceed to the abolition of all the stockpiles on Earth.

 – Yuri Andropov

Samantha quickly gained recognition as America’s youngest ambassador. She journeyed to the Soviet Union and penned a book detailing her experiences. Samantha traveled the globe engaging in peace-building efforts and even dabbled in acting, starring in the television show Lime Street.

Tragically, her promising life was cut short at the tender age of 13. She met a crash when the plane she was on crashed on August 25, 1985.
